Does social media violate our privacy?

Nowadays, social media is part of our lives. We can do a lot of things and are free to express anything through social media. But we never realize how much personal information we have shared on social media. All social media sites need our personal data so we can access them. There will be a risk that our data will be exposed by accident or through security loopholes. Along with the advancement of technology, the crime rate associated with the use of technology is also increasing. Have you ever thought that social media could violate our privacy?

There have been so many cases about personal data safety on social media. Stolen identities, selling data to third parties, spreading malware and viruses, and other cases that already happened recently. This action was caused by some people who want to make money by selling our personal data. This is why social media could violate our privacy. We thought that no one could know our personal data through social media because we didn’t give it to a person but to an internet platform. But it’s all wrong! A reliable hacker could easily find our personal data, and they could do anything they want with our personal data. If they sell it to people with bad intentions, our personal data can be used to do something dangerous or illegal. Sometimes personal data is used for deception, such as in scams, phishing, account takeovers, ID theft, sharing log-in information, and stealing cards.

Another case caused by the leaking of personal data is malware and viruses. Malware is used by hackers to steal personal, financial, or business data. Usually there are some suspicious links when we are exploring social media, which can cause malware and viruses.

Besides that, social media could track our location. This is the scariest thing because people could easily find us, even people that we don’t know who. So it’s better for us not to share our detailed address if it’s not necessary. We could disable our location on social media so people couldn’t find us.

Misinformation and propaganda become common due to the leakage of personal data. Usually, people who share misinformation and propaganda ask for ransom or intimidate the victim into sharing their personal data so they can profit from it.

So in conclusion, it’s better for us to be careful and alert about social media that needs our personal data. If it’s unnecessary, it’s better not to fill it and not give our information in detail. Also, do not ever share our personal data with someone we are not close to or our social media passwords with someone. It’s better for us to keep it ourselves; therefore, we could protect ourselves from misuse of personal information that could harm ourselves.
